  • The first Pixel 6a update is out.
  • It brings the August security patch to the phone ahead of all other Pixels.

Google is updating the Pixel 6a just as it’s reaching the hands of customers. The OTA update includes the August 2022 security patch, which is a first for any Pixel. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are currently on the July patch but should get the latest security update soon enough.

The rollout for the Pixel 6a update has already started, and Google notes it’ll continue over the next few weeks in phases. You might see the update sooner or later, depending on your carrier network.

Following are the software versions for the first Pixel 6a update:

  • Global (Unlocked) Pixel 6a: SD2A.220601.003
  • AT&T, T-Mobile Pixel 6a: SD2A.220601.002
  • Verizon Pixel 6a: SD2A.220601.004

It’s unclear if the latest Pixel 6a update fixes the previously reported fingerprint unlocking bug. Google hasn’t addressed the issue, but some people who have the Pixel 6a claim that the fingerprint sensor unlocks for any person who uses it. Let’s hope this isn’t a widespread problem like the Pixel 6’s unreliable fingerprint sensor. For what it’s worth, we didn’t have the problem while reviewing the Pixel 6a. Our unit doesn’t allow non-registered fingerprints to unlock the phone.
